  1. According to the American Kennel Club, Labs have been America’s favorite dog breed for 24 consecutive yearsblack lab Beau
  2. They originate south of Labrador, in Newfoundland in the 1700’s
  3. Fishermen used labs to help bring in fishing nets and catch fish that escaped the hook
  4. Because they were bred for the water, they have a double coat, which makes them practically waterproof
  5. They have webbed toes and they can use their tail to steer their direction in the water
  6. Labrador retrievers became common in England in the 1870’s
  7. Officially recognized by the AKC in 1917

  8. Average life span is 12-14 years
  9. Females usually weigh 55-70 lbs and males usually weigh 80-100 lbs
  10. There are only 3 colors of Labs that are recognized- Black, yellow and chocolate
  11. They can be prone to some eye disorders and hip dysplasia
  12. Labradors were bred to spend time with people, so they are also prone to separation anxiety
  13. ┬áVery sensitive to their owner’s moods
  14. Need to be socialized early with people and other pets
  15. All in all, Labs are high-energy, friendly, outgoing and play well with others
